Freelance Engineers
Project-based work for engineers who want to keep their independence but want the delivery structure of a company behind them.
- Experience
- 2–6 years
- Engagement
- Contract
- Location
- Remote
About the role
We keep a bench of freelance engineers we call on when an engagement needs a specialism or extra capacity. This is not a talent pool we sit on — we contact people when there is real, scoped, paid work. You would work inside our process: a named delivery manager, pull request review, sprint demos, and a written scope, rather than a vague brief and a chase for payment.
What you would do
- Deliver a scoped piece of work against a written statement of work
- Work inside our delivery process — code review, automated tests, and the definition of done that applies to everyone
- Attend the sprint ceremonies relevant to your work; we will not fill your calendar beyond that
- Hand over documented, maintainable work, because someone else will pick it up
What we need from you
- 2–6 years of professional experience in your specialism
- A body of work you can walk us through and explain the decisions in
- Availability you can state honestly and hold to
- Ability to invoice as an independent contractor
Useful, not required
- Depth in one of our five service lines rather than breadth across all of them
- Prior experience working inside another team’s process
How hiring runs
Four steps, and a decision within a week.
Application
Send your CV and anything you have built. For engineering roles a repository or shipped product tells us more than a covering letter.
Intro conversation
Thirty minutes on what you want to work on and what we actually do. Ask us hard questions here — we would rather you did.
Technical conversation
A discussion of real problems, not a whiteboard puzzle. For engineering roles we will look at code you have written, or work through a small realistic problem together.
Decision
A clear yes or no with the reasoning, within a week. If it is a no, we will tell you why.
We have not published salary bands. Rather than print a range we would have to caveat, we will tell you the band for the role in the first conversation, before you invest time in a process. Compensation is set on the role and your experience, not on what you were paid previously.
Apply
Send us your work, not a covering letter.
